Helser's Internet speed is 10 Mbps full duplex for each room (much slower than much of campus). We know the speed has been this way from fall 2014 and still persists to fall 2015. I conacted ITS for an explanation of the speeds and below is their response. This summer, in addition to the one wireless AP per room model that the Department of Residence agreed to, we upgraded all the network switches in the wiring closets in all Residence buildings to provide gigabit and power-over-ethernet capability to each network jack. At this point, all of the hardware (routers, switches, and the wired ports on the APs) are capable of 1 Gbps speeds. Unfortunately, the wiring in the majority of the student rooms is very old and incapable of supporting these speeds. Some of the newer buildings (Frederiksen Court, Martin, and Eaton) and remodeled buildings (Buchanan and Maple) do have newer wiring. Wherever possible, we have 1 Gbps speeds available. We have been working with the Department of Residence on ways to get the wiring upgraded. The problems are that it is very costly and it is very disruptive.
